The Children's Advocacy Center
GRANTS PASS, OR · USA · 2024
(COMMERCIAL)

Designing a commercial space for a children’s advocacy center required a careful balance between emotional sensitivity and functional performance. The goal was to create an environment that felt safe, warm, and welcoming, without leaning too heavily into a “small child” aesthetic that could feel patronizing or overstimulating for older children and teens. Every design decision was made with intention—supporting a wide range of ages while maintaining a calm, grounded atmosphere for individuals navigating highly vulnerable experiences

Acoustics played a critical role, particularly within therapy rooms and adjacent hallways. Sound control strategies were thoughtfully integrated to ensure privacy, reduce noise transfer, and create a sense of quiet containment. This included the use of acoustic panels, soft materials, and spatial planning techniques that minimize echo and disruption—allowing conversations to remain confidential and emotionally safe.
Color theory and lighting were equally essential in shaping the experience of the space. A carefully curated palette of bright, uplifting tones was selected to inspire a sense of warmth and positivity while avoiding a sterile or clinical feel. Lighting was layered and intentionally warm, with high-quality sources that enhance natural tones and reduce harsh contrasts. The result is a space that feels composed and supportive—one that gently holds its occupants, rather than overwhelming them.
